ΠPickings: Designer IVANMAN

image

By: Phuong Lam

This week, Berlin-based designer Ivan Mandzukic, mastermind behind the men’s wear label IVANMAN, compiles his style essentials for Œ readers. Gentlemen, If you weren’t there to witness the label’s runway debut this past summer at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, or missed the runway recaps, you’d be wise to put IVANMAN on your fashion radar now. Have a look, in fact, take a close one because this is minimalism gone fantastically right. The designer is a wizard of delightful details and brought us one of the most cohesive men’s wear collection at Fashion Week in July. Naturally, we couldn’t resist asking him for his top picks!

Perk Up at the Optimistic Store

image

image

By: Amanda Fitz-James

There is a new concept store in town!  Lately the center of Berlin is getting filled with big international brands, so it’s always nice to see a new concept store brightening up the scene. The Optimistic Store opened a year ago at Brunnenstraße, but has recently located to Rochstraße 17. With Wood Wood and other nice shops neighboring the boutique, this street is getting more and more interesting every time I find myself in this part of Mitte. It is apparent, even with a quick glance through the shop, that owner Nathalie loves nice and exclusive things. And it is out of love for such that the Optimistic Store was born. “I started with importing soap I always used in France.”

Just Landed Vintage Touches Down in Berlin

image

(Just Landed: T-Shirt)

By Biki John

All true Vintage lovers and addicts know that one can never know enough vintage stores; that’s why we are excited to have discovered Just Landed—another vintage brand to set our stylish sights on. Just Landed is a Berlin-based vintage brand that was founded by Neapolitan transplant Marcello Passaro.  Taking advantage of Berlin’s thriving vintage scene, Passaro sells his must-have pieces in various well known flea markets like Mauerpark and Nowkoelln. He also holds pop-up store events in charming locations like Studio Chérie, where customers can peruse his finely-selected pieces, whilst being treated to his self-made mouthwatering appetizers (he also runs a catering service called The Napoli Connection).

Πmanaged to catch up with Marcello Passaro to quiz him on various pressing sartorial matters.

Men’s Shoe Masterminds: An interview with VELT

image

By Christopher Riedl

When it comes to shoes, most of us fashion lovers have to admit: We are addicts. If a new label peaks around the corner with a piece of perfection, we will go insane. Usually this is a female specific phenomenon, but luckily for the gentlemen shoe gazers out there, we are happy to introduce VELT. Launched in April 2013, VELT is one of the most promising men’s footwear labels to emerge.

Recently, Œ Magazine met up with Stefan Rechsteiner and Patrick Rüegg, the masterminds behind VELT, to talk about their spring/summer 2014 collection, their design process and the Swiss Design Award.

A Look into Spring

By: Phuong Lam

For the many journalists, editors, stylists, and bloggers who have already seen the upcoming season’s collection at Fashion Week, the Press Days (which have come and gone this month) can be seen as a seasonal exercise in formality. PR Agencies open their showroom doors offering up top notch press pampering, free food, and free product samples for the opportunity to showcase their clients’ collections and pass out lookbooks. For those of us at Œ, the Press Days signal the start of the next production season, gently reminding us to follow up with promising labels and seasoned designers. There is much to be discovered in the sea of Berlin design talent and, unfortunately, not all designers find themselves in the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin tent or in a showroom during the German Press Days. This season, instead of recapping what was already recapped in January or rehashing our Press Day adventures, I’ve rounded up 5 SS 14 collections I’ve come across (outside of the fashion tent) from designers who deserve your attention now.

Kombinat Kollektionen: HTW Graduate Fashion Show

image

By Christopher Riedl

Everyone is constantly on the hunt for something new. We all love exhibitions we’ve never seen before, places we never traveled to and clubs we never danced in. Œ Magazine feels the same way when it comes to new design talents. We are craving for exciting ideas, realized in wearable garments that are refreshing and different. With a thirst for discovery, Œ Magazine went to see the HTW Graduate Fashion Show "KOKO Kombinat Kollektionen" at HO | Berlin to gaze at the creative output of 13 young design minds from Berlin.

Four graduates caught our attention – Let us tell you why.

Berlin Showroom’s second hit in Paris

image

By: Phuong Lam

The air of frenzy in our office this week can only point to one thing—Paris Fashion Week is on the horizon. This season, Berlin Showroom will open its doors to press, buyers, and afashionados in the Marais featuring 23 spring/summer collections from some of Berlin’s most promising designers. For the second edition of Berlin Showroom, I had the distinct pleasure of contributing to its fashion editorial, which, to all our excitement, has been featured on vogue.de and elle.de.

Berlin in Africa: Gambia Travelogue

By: Tintin Jonsson

We will do our absolute best not to make this yet another one of those travelogues where the storyteller is overusing superlatives in order to describe how fantastic his recent trip was.

What seemed to characterize our trip to Gambia was a sense of dualism and ambivalence that was always present. When we first arrived we got completely lavished by all the new impressions. Although, when that first overwhelming flood of impressions started to fade, and we could see beyond the virgin pina coladas to the poverty and compromise of desperate people, we realized Gambia is a mirage of a cocktail. Maybe it attracts you with it’s vivid colors and beautiful fresh fruit adorning theglass, but upon first taste, you realize its like a 3,90€ drink from Que Pasa served by an underpaid waitress.

By: Biki John

On Tuesday, September 3, 2013, Kinder & Tank, the berlin-based T-shirt label, celebrated the launch of its debut collection and online store by throwing a party in the basement of Paul-Lincke-Ufer 40, Kreuzberg.

Jameson provided the bar, whilst Corona sponsored the drinks.  Journalists, photographers, stylists, bloggers and guests mingled over the yummy ‘Kinder & Tank Old-fashioned’ cocktails, which consisted of a delicious mix of Jameson whiskey, bourbon and lemons.
